Long-term blood pressure measurement

In principle, the long-term blood pressure measurement is carried out like a measurement in the doctor’s office. The patient wears an upper arm cuff that is connected to a small device via a tube. In contrast to the one-time measurement, however, the cuff is usually kept on for 24 hours. Every 15 minutes – at night every 30 minutes – it inflates and measures the blood pressure. In the practice, the daily blood pressure profile is then read out and evaluated.

Long-term blood pressure measurement has the following advantages, among others:

  • Detection of high blood pressure and altered day-night rhythm
  • Monitoring the success of drug therapy
  • Exclusion of “white coat high pressure”, in which non-representative values are measured due to tension in the practice situation.
  • Clarification of event-dependent blood pressure rises.
