Duplex sonography of the semicircular arteries
Duplex sonography is a high-resolution ultrasound examination that can detect vascular changes at an early stage. The focus is on the vessels supplying the brain, especially the carotid artery; the thickness of the vessel wall can be precisely determined with the help of a computer, and constrictions that can obstruct the blood flow can be detected.
The procedure also serves to clarify the risk of stroke and heart attack. In detail, it provides helpful information on the early detection of the following diseases, among others:
- Arteriosclerosis
- Vascular constrictions (stenoses)
- Plaques (advanced vasoconstriction).
Duplex sonography is also used to monitor the success or progress of surgical interventions or drug therapy.
Please note that the statutory health insurance funds do not reimburse the costs of duplex sonography of the carotid arteries as a preventive examination. The method is therefore an IGeL (individual health service) that must be paid for by statutory health insurance patients themselves.
