Echocardiography uses ultrasound waves to examine the heart from the outside through the chest wall. This examination method allows the size of the heart and the function of the heart and valves to be assessed. For example, any thickening of the heart muscles or wall movement disorders can be detected, which can indicate a heart attack or heart muscle diseases. In addition, echocardiography can be used to show diseases of the heart valves, for example if they are leaking. Pressure measurements in the heart are also possible.
Doppler and colour duplex sonography can also be used to determine the flow velocity of the blood. This enables the doctor to detect narrowed or leaking heart valves and short-circuit connections and to comprehensively assess the function of the heart and circulation.
